Australia is an enormous country with a diverse array of amazing landscapes, from white-sand beaches and mountains to rainforests and deserts. Add to that how all of these places are well connected by quality highways and it is easy to see why it is one of the top road-trip destinations globally.

However, something that a number of unfortunate road-trippers learn each year is that there are a few Australia-specific essentials they should bring with them to make sure their trip is as smooth and comfortable as possible right from the start.

This is a guide to the items you should bring to make your road trip as good as it can be.

  1. Toll tags: Part of the reason Australia’s highways are as well-maintained as they are is that many of them are toll roads, meaning you have to pay to use them. However, in many cases now there are no attended booths where you can pay someone. It is all done by a camera or sensor which recognizes a device attached to a vehicle’s window or dashboard called a ‘toll tag. ’

If you are hiring a vehicle, your hire company should already have one of these installed. They will likely add the fees to your account. If you are using your own vehicle and are planning on road-tripping for a long time, you should try to get your own toll tag. Otherwise, you have to phone the toll road operator within three days of using the road to pay. Failure to do so results in a fine.

  1. Sunshades: Car shades in Australia are a definite must-have. If you want to stop off somewhere and cannot find any shaded parking, without them you can expect to return to a boiling hot vehicle that you will have to ventilate for several minutes before being able to continue on your journey.

Invest in some simple shades as they can make a big difference when it comes to keeping your car and anything inside it, such as water bottles, cool.

  1.  Recovery tracks: At some points, you will need to leave the highways and might end up driving on some tougher tracks, including ones made from mud and sand. This is where things can become difficult and you might even get stuck. If that happens, you will be glad that you packed some plastic recovery tracks.

Some other good things to take for this purpose are ropes or straps and a shovel.

  1. Power bank or USB charger: There are plenty of things to smile about in Australia, so keep your camera or smartphone charged to make sure you can capture them all. Chargers and power banks will not necessarily be included with rental vehicles, so remember to bring your own.
  2. Car tyre chains: Something that first time drivers in Australia might not know is that certain mountainous regions of the country actually require drivers to carry car chains by law.

These are to help if your vehicle gets trapped in snow or ice, so make sure you keep some with you if you are heading to areas with colder climates.
