Renovating any room can be tricky, but bathrooms pose a special challenge because they need to incorporate water. The internet and magazines abound with images of beautiful bathrooms, but often in practice a renovation is not as simple as pointing to a picture and saying “I want that one.”

However, that does not mean that there aren’t principles that can be followed to ensure that your new bathroom ends up looking its best. Here are some tricks of the trade that the professionals know but you might not.

  1. Make it extra dry: This is a practical tip rather than an aesthetic one. Damp and humidity can lead to mould and mildew, which can cause big problems if you’re not careful. So go the extra mile to make sure all moisture is removed after use.  If you were thinking that you might not need an extractor fan because you’ve already got a window, think again.
  2. Have a couple of high-end materials: When doing bathroom renovations in Sydney or other big cities, chances are that the bathroom is smaller than the type that gets photographed and used as inspiration. However, this can work in your favour. With a smaller space, spending on just a couple of higher-quality materials or items often adds little to your budget but a lot to the overall feeling of luxury.
  3. Corner sinks: An obvious-when-you-think-about-it solution to a problem faced in many small bathrooms, but strangely not many people do think about it. If you’ve only got a tight space to work with and the main door or shower screen cannot open properly, corner sinks can be a useful way to create some extra space.
  4. Don’t open onto the toilet: The entry door can open onto anything but the toilet. Why? Because nobody wants to be looking at it, even a sparkling clean one. If you’re looking to create a bathroom with a zen-like aura of calm or the feeling of a spa, a toilet is probably not going to be the first thing you want to see when stepping inside. And it’s not going to be what you want your guests to look at if the door is accidentally left open.
  5. Let natural light in: People tend to care more about their bedroom, living room, or kitchen getting lots of natural light, yet some of the calmest and contemplative times of the day come in the shower or bathtub. Natural light can also make small spaces look larger.
  6. Have a focal point: Most people opt for a fairly minimal colour scheme in their bathrooms, but it will look better if this is balanced with an area or feature that is a bit different.
  7. Provide storage space: Too many toiletries scattered around can create unsightly clutter, no matter how big the bathroom. Have many storage solutions available to keep things out of sight.
  8. Make sure it’s functional: Ambient lighting is all well and good, but make sure it’s bright enough for everything people need to do.

Make sure drawers and cabinets can be opened fully, and that there are no hard-to-reach places you cannot clean so that bathroom hygiene can be maintained easily.
