Coquette aesthetic recently getting so much attention on Tik Tok & Pinterest. Currently you can find many photos spreaded around over the internet by the term ‘Coquette Aesthetic’. On the meaning & definition of the Coquette there are numerous of the claims. Some reputed education institutes dictionaries suggest that coquette means a woman who used to flirt but not being serious about it. And another story is linked with Coquette, That the Coquette was borrowed in English in the mid 17th century, by the French word pronounced as “Coq”. Coq is used for the male bird and Coquette refers to a little female bird. This story linked with the colorful hummingbirds found in Latin America. And as female hummingbird teases males it refers to the means of Coquette. That’s the common theory believed to be the origin of Coquette.

Coquette is not any vintage fashion, but a 2020s fashion trend that got viral on the various social media platforms like- Puintrest, Tik-Tok & more. Some of the creators presented the coquette fashion with a modern twist. The inspiration of the Coquette aesthetic derived from Lolita’s fashion from a Japanese film released in 1962. The trends have some characteristics like- sweet, romantic and can be erotic elements. Expressing femininity through the use of laces, flounces, pastel colour and bows.

As the trend got so much attention & fashion experts continued creating new outfits and trends with the attributes of Coquette, the aesthetics kept growing and divided into various styles of Coquette. Here we are mentioning some of the most popular styles from the Coquette aesthetic.

Nymphet

Nymphet, also known as ‘Vintage Americana Coquette’ based on the character named ‘Lolita’ from the Japanese film, mainly focused on the styling sense of the character from the movie, which was a vintage look from the 1950’s American schoolgirls. However, in the cover of this some also romanticizes the actions against victim in the movie.

Dark Nymphet

Dark Nymphet, widely popular as ‘Dark Coquette’. It includes beauty, mystery, seduction and danger as characteristics. The outfits of the style have fur finish, veiled hats and main attributes like laces and bows with heels.

Dollette

Dollete is a new styling term added to Coquette in the 2020s. Mostly got the popularity by Tik-Tok and Pinterest. As attributes it includes- florals, ballets, flowers, makeup and surrounded around pink themes. Currently it’s a face of Coquette aesthetic.

Farmer’s Daughter

Farmer’s daughter style is particularly focused on the countryside’s fashion, by adding the characteristics of Coquette like- laces & bows. Represents the feminine with sexual attires implemented in traditional American rural traditions.

Coconut Girl

Coconut Girl, widely known as ‘Malibu Barbie’ has the touch of tropical beaches in Florida. The style gives the feeling of a young woman who is enjoying her vacations. This styling revolves around the contrasty & bright colours and carry the feel of summers.

Waif

Waifu is completely different from the other styling mentioned above. And actually it’s not even a proper styling, it’s a type of blogging who posts about the beauty and destructive mindset of the teenage girls. On the name styling & glamour, they are glamorizing drugs, depression & eating disorders.

Winter Fairy Coquette

Winter fairy coquette style is the addition of a coquette to the warm clothes. Also popular as ‘Winter Bimbo’. It also has subcategories further divided as- Snow drop and Softie. As it’s for winter, it mainly includes white & other like- brown, pastels, beige and dark colour also can be on the list.

Gloomy Coquette

Gloomy Coquette is the gloomier version of the Dollette, it has the same sweet essence from the Dollette style. But, some of its attributes make it completely different. It includes- images of graveyards, insects and more. Uses a sexual & trashy look with lingerie as well as bondage.

Bubblegum Coquette

Bubblegum Coquette is another vintage style in the list. Nostalgic essence of the era 90’s to 2000s. It is similar to the babygirl aesthetic, as ‘Baddie Baygirl’.

Controversies on Coquette Aesthetic

  • The Coquette aesthetic has been criticized widely for bringing the outdated notions of European femininity. 
  • Similar to the first one, some people criticize it for that it is inspired from Lolita’s fashion and it could be problematic that some of the people romanticize the crimes against minors.
  • The Aesthetics also romanticizes some of the concerning actions like drug usage, depression and more. Also serious issues like eating disorders.
  • Some of the styles have been created by the implementations in cultural dresses.
