Poltergeist is the 1982 movie poltergeist used real skeletons as – tymoff most famous supernatural horror film, directed by Tobe Hooper.  Other than the chilling storyline, the movie is popular for its special effects, and if that is not enough, then what if I told you that the movie extended horror beyond the screen and into reality by using real skeletons as props?

Plot of the Movie Politergeist

Steve and Diane happily live in the planned community of Cuesta Verde, California. Steve works as a successful real estate agent, and Diane is his housewife. She looks after three children:16-year-old Dana, 8-year-old Robbie, and 5-year-old Carol Anne.  Late one night Carol Anne One late evening, Carol Anne strangely starts talking to the family TV while post-broadcast static plays. When she stares at the TV the following night, a spectral white hand appears on the screen, and a strong earthquake follows. Carol Anne eerily says, “They are here,” as the quake shakes the family awake.

Then the next day is totally fill with bizarre events: A glass of milk spontaneously breaks,silverware bends,and furniture moves on its own.  The rates of these phenomena  started increasing drastically. 

Parapsychologist Martha Lesh and team members Ryan and Marty arrive to investigate. They see it as a poltergeist attack with many ghosts involved. Now Steve hears from his boss, Louise Teague, that the Cuesta Verde development was built in a former cemetery and the coffin was move to a nearby location

Dana and Robbie are take to safety, and Drs. Lesh, on the other hand, calls Tangina Barons, spirit mediums. Tangina decides that spirits exist in a different “realm of consciousness” and do not rest. They are draw to the life force of Carole Anne. Tangina also inhabits a dark presence she calls “The Beast,” who controls Carol Anne and uses her life force to prevent other spirits from crossing

Shortly thereafter, the Freelings nearly finished packing to move out. Before the family leaves, Steven goes to his office while Dana goes on a date, leaving Diane at home with Robbie and Carol Ann. The “beast” pounces on the witch and the children, and targets a second kidnapping attempt. An unseen force takes Diana to the backyard in the rain, where she stumbles while digging a flooded swimming pool. Skeletal corpses and coffins hanging free in the mud hole. The witch creeps out and rushes back into the house. He saves the children, and they run out

Historical Representation

To know why people say real skeletons were used in Poltergeist, we have to look at how effects were used in movies in the early 1980s. At that time, filmmakers preferred to use practical effects over digital effects. They tried different ways to make things look real in movies. Also, sometimes they didn’t have a lot of money to spend, so they had to get creative to make their movies look good.

In the most bizarre scenes of Poltergeist, the Freeling family house goes absolutely insane when Diane Freeling goes for a dip in the family swimming pool and it suddenly gets fill with mud and rain.  As soon as she realizes it, it gets fill with crops.

The skeletons used in this scene were not fake but actual human skeletons.  According to the crew member, these skeletons were take from a medical supply company.  The real reason behind doing this is not to make the situation more realistic.  In reality,the cost of creating fake skeletons or purchasing premade skeleton replicas is higher.

Is this Ethically correct? 

The use of real skeletons in Politergeist raised ethical questions on how we should treat human remains and is it ethically correct to use someone’s remains in the entertainment industry ? These concerns hide behind financial and artistic factors. And ultimately, they were using them for movies. But time has changed now and  it is hard to imagine such a practice being acceptable today.

The Poltergeist Curse

Proponents of the so-called “poltergeist curse” often refer to the 1982 movie poltergeist used real skeletons as – tymoff.
